“For optimal safety & specialised care”

The Hobart Anaesthetic Group

The Hobart Anaesthetic Group (THAG - also known as “The Group”) is Hobart’s leading Anaesthetic Group and has been a significant part of the Hobart medical community since 1960, when it was established by Dr Tom Thomson after he had completed his time as Director of Anaesthesia at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

“The Group’s” Anaesthetists practice as individuals within an associate-ship arrangement, and currently comprises of 9 staff and 41 Associate and Affiliate specialist qualified Anaesthetists with a diverse range of skills and areas of specialised practice. These numbers are steadily growing each year in line with the growing needs of our surgeons, specialists and the community in Hobart. Our practice is one of the largest and oldest in Australia.

Our Anaesthetists attend all private hospitals in the Hobart area, and provide 24-hour, 365 day per year emergency care to over 80 of Hobart’s surgeons and specialists. For over 60 years the focus of our doctors has been on providing safe and timely care to all of our patients.

The Hobart Anaesthetic Group’s practice location is 303 Macquarie Street, Hobart. Our primary location serves as the main administrative hub for bookings, accounts, patient contact and is also the location where our comprehensive Pre-Anaesthesia assessment service takes place prior to patients’ admissions to hospital.

Meet Your Anaesthetist

To ensure optimum safety, you will require a Specialist Anaesthetist to provide anaesthesia care during your forthcoming procedure. A Specialist Anaesthetist is a doctor who has completed a medical degree and also further specialist training in anaesthesia and gained Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists. Of particular importance in this field is the safe use of anaesthesia drugs and other techniques, careful monitoring of patients, pain management, resuscitation and intensive care, as well as extensive training in anaesthesia for other specialised areas such as obstetrics and paediatrics.

Your anaesthetist is responsible for your safety and care during surgery and the recovery from your operation. The anaesthetist will stay with you for the duration of the operation, making sure that you are safely anaesthetised and will constantly monitor all of your vital functions including breathing, heart rate and blood pressure.

General Information About Your Anaesthetic

You will be required to fast for several hours prior to your procedure (usually 6 hours for food and 2 hours for clear fluids such as water, apple juice or black tea “no milk”). This includes chewing gum and other sweets or lollies. Also, if a smoker, you should stop as early as possible prior to surgery and Anaesthesia to improve your ability to carry oxygen appropriately around the body.

Your Anaesthetist will consult with and assess you prior to your procedure and discuss all aspects of Anaesthesia care with you. Sometimes it is necessary for further tests to be performed or even further consultations with other specialists. If this is required, your Anaesthetist will arrange these for you. Your Anesthetist will want to know all about you, your medical conditions and your previous experiences with Anaesthesia. If you have a complex medical history, your Anaesthetist may want to see you in person on speak with you over the phone prior to your hospital admission. This will take place in our rooms at 303 Macquarie Street.

Your surgeon is able to provide you with your Anaesthetists contact details at any time. A patient health care summary and results of previous investigations can provide valuable information to your Anaesthetist and aid them to deliver the highest level of care to you during your procedure, so you may receive a request from our rooms prior to an appointment or your surgery to provide details to assist us in obtaining these.
