Pre-Anaesthetic Assessments

Your Anaesthetist will need to speak with you prior to your surgery.  Traditionally this has occurred in hospital, the night before surgery, but now, most patients arrive in hospital the morning of surgery (often shortly before the scheduled time of the surgery).

Your Anaesthetist needs to ensure that you are fit for your surgery, plan the type of anaesthetic to be administered, and organise pain relief for after your procedure.

The Hobart Anaesthetic Group has organised a system where patients can be seen pre-operatively in our rooms at 303 Macquarie St or in some cases, undertake a consultation via telehealth on zoom or over the phone.  While this is usually arranged for complex procedures, it is also undertaken for patients with significant medical conditions or who have particular concerns about their procedure or anaesthetic.  This appointment is sometimes requested by the patient, but most often by the surgeon or your Anaesthetist.

Most patients having more minor procedures will see their Anaesthetist in hospital prior to their procedure taking place.

Our Pre-Anaesthetic coordinator will arrange an appointment for you (if one is required), working around your Anaesthetists availability outside of their hospital commitments.

Prior to the appointment taking place, we may send a text message requesting your email and your GP’s name and contact details. This is so we may obtain your Health Care Summary to alert your Anaesthetist to anything that may assist them with ensuring your surgery runs as smoothly as possible.

We also ask patients to fill in a health questionnaire (Patient Registration Form). The form is often emailed out with the appointment details or posted if time permits, and email is not available.  Patients are also asked to bring any details of their past medical problems and medications (including herbal medications) along to the consultation.  During your appointment, your Anaesthetist will discuss options for anaesthesia and pain relief, order tests, if necessary, refer you to other specialists for an opinion is necessary or may even advise not to proceed with surgery in rare scenarios.

Once completed; please email to pre-anaesthesia@thegroup.com.au

*There is a fee for a preoperative assessment.  Medicare provides a rebate for this, but a gap or out of pocket may still be charged. The fees will be outlined in the Pre-Anaesthetic appointment letter you are sent.
